{"id":13031,"date":"2022-11-08T17:18:12","date_gmt":"2022-11-08T17:18:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/onhee.com\/?p=13031"},"modified":"2022-11-08T17:18:12","modified_gmt":"2022-11-08T17:18:12","slug":"ankle-injury-means-matt-giteau-has-probably-played-his-last-game-for-the-wallabies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/onhee.com\/?p=13031","title":{"rendered":"Ankle injury means Matt Giteau has probably played his last game for the Wallabies"},"content":{"rendered":"<\/p>\n<p>THE WOES MOUNTED for the beleaguered Wallabies today with news Matt Giteau\u00a0would be out for the rest of the Rugby Championship series with a fractured ankle.<\/p>\n<p>Scans confirmed the Australian team\u2019s worst fears, with the French-based star ruled out and outside back Rob Horne facing a likely shoulder reconstruction.\u00a0Both players, along with a third back Matt Toomua, were forced off during the first half of Australia\u2019s horror 42-8 mauling by the world champions in Sydney yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>Coach Michael Cheika faces a selection headache ahead of Australia\u2019s return Test in Wellington on Saturday to keep alive the three-match Bledisloe Cup series against the rampant All Blacks.<\/p>\n<p>Cheika will have to make do without the 103-Test capped\u00a0Giteau, who is likely to have played for the Wallabies for the last time.<\/p>\n<p>Giteau\u00a0lasted just 10 minutes before he hobbled out of the game to be replaced by Toomua, who in turn was forced off with concussion.\u00a0The 33-year-old made a big financial sacrifice to put his country before French club side Toulon, where the midfield playmaker is among the highest-paid players in world rugby.<\/p>\n<p>He made no secret that he returned home to Australia during the French Top 14 season to have \u201cone last crack\u201d at elusive Bledisloe Cup glory.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>                    Source: SANZAAR\/YouTube<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMatt\u2019s got a bit of a break in his leg at the top of his leg and a bit of a fracture in his ankle,\u201d Cheika told reporters on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s disappointed but he\u2019s also very realistic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s a pro. He knows that he\u2019s still got to get himself right and get back to his club commitments for later in the season so that\u2019s what he\u2019ll be doing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>No positives<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Giteau, who came on the field on crutches after full-time, has now featured in 10 unsuccessful Bledisloe Cup campaigns against New Zealand.<\/p>\n<p>Click Here: <a href='https:\/\/www.jerstores.com\/United-Kingdom-Rugby-Jerseys' title='United Kingdom Rugby Jersey'>United Kingdom Rugby Jersey<\/a><\/p>\n<p>He twice played in losing World Cup finals in Sydney in the 2003 decider and against the All Blacks last year at Twickenham.<\/p>\n<p>Cheika said he was considering a few selection options for the second Test, and did not discount the possibility of switching Israel Folau from fullback to the centres.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll have a look at that today around the possible options that we\u2019ve got,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Cheika was downcast after the Wallabies\u2019 wretched performance against the All Blacks, who are primed to retain the trans-Tasman Bledisloe Cup they have held since 2003.<\/p>\n<p>Asked if there were any positives to be taken from the wreckage, Cheika told reporters after Saturday\u2019s game: \u201cNot really. That would be a lie of me if I tried to find one.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019ll have a chance to work on it in seven days. Source: Photosport\/Paul Seiser\/INPHO<\/p>\n<p>Cheika, who has now presided over five straight Wallabies defeats since last October\u2019s World Cup final loss to New Zealand, was caustic about his team\u2019s feeble defence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought we defended very poorly,\u201d he said. \u201cDefence is attitude, so there\u2019s no rustiness. Let\u2019s get that one out of the way straight away. When players run you\u2019ve got to tackle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Wallabies missed a total of 40 tackles, lost four lineouts on their own throw and conceded a tight head scrum as the All Blacks claimed their biggest-winning margin in Australia.<\/p>\n<p>The42 is on Snapchat!
