David Moyes \u201cshould have been given more time\u201d at Manchester United, says Peter Schmeichel, while Jose Mourinho would have been a better appointment than Louis van Gaal in 2014.<\/p>\n

The Red Devils have endured a tough time on the managerial front since seeing Sir Alex Ferguson head into retirement.<\/p>\n

The Scot spent 27 years in charge of the Old Trafford outfit, but there have been five different coaches in the dugout in the six years since he departed.<\/p>\n

Moyes lasted a matter of months, Ryan Giggs filled a caretaker post, Van Gaal managed two seasons, Mourinho two-and-a-half and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is now in interim charge.<\/p>\n

United legend Schmeichel has questioned some of the calls which have been made in Manchester, with it his opinion that persevering with Moyes would have delivered greater stability.<\/p>\n

The iconic goalkeeper, who also feels Mourinho should have been landed sooner, told beIN Sports<\/em>: \u201cIf we should have any regrets as Manchester United, that is that we only gave David Moyes seven months.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think we should have given him more time, accepted that results weren\u2019t going to be the way we hoped they would be and that playing would be a little bit different.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI believe he would have grown into that role. He has the personality and he had so many things he needed to learn and he didn\u2019t have anybody to learn them from.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was left to run the football department on his own. I think that really would have helped him [keeping Mike Phelan], had he had someone with that kind of experience.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I also understand where he\u2019s coming from. He did think that he brought that experience with Phil Neville so he had someone there.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think he wanted someone there who had worked with Sir Alex. I can understand that, but maybe when you look back maybe that was a mistake.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cBut from the club\u2019s perspective we should never, ever have dismissed him.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\u201cThat left us into making rash decisions, so we bring in a name and that went completely wrong.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cHad we brought in Mourinho instead of Louis van Gaal, I\u2019m sure history would have told that it would have been better.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt would have been so much better for him to come in at that point rather than after Van Gaal. There were too many things that happened, too many players brought in that didn\u2019t suit him and possibly didn\u2019t suit Man United as well.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cBut we go back and look at our history, we look at the number of years from Sir Matt [Busby] stopping and retiring in the 70s and all the way to \u201886.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt still took Fergie from \u201886 to \u201893 to seal the first championship so United is the kind of club that will always bounce back. This time we just hope it\u2019s a little bit quicker.\u201d<\/p>\n

United have enjoyed a return to form under Solskjaer, collecting 10 wins from an 11-game unbeaten run and climbing back into the Premier League\u2019s top four, but are yet to make a decision on whether the Norwegian will be handed the reins on a permanent basis past the end of the season.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
