Starting from the north and ending at Neuschwanstein Castle and views of the alps is the popular route. For that very reason, this North-to-South path can get congested on the two lane road.<\/p>\n<p>To avoid traffic, we suggest touring in the opposite direction, starting in F\u00fcssen.<br \/>\nFly to &#8230; <\/p>\n<h3>MUNICH<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<p>And spend a night at <strong>Louis Hotel<\/strong> to overcome jet lag. Try the luncheon all-you-can-eat buffet.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Don\u2019t Miss<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Medieval Old Town<\/strong><br \/>\nF\u00fcssen&#8217;s medieval town center is ideal for strolling, shopping and exploring the winding streets with Gothic gabled roofs, the remains of the old city walls, and Baroque churches.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The F\u00fcssen Heritage Museum (Museum der Stadt F\u00fcssen)<\/strong><br \/>\nLocated in the former Benedictine Monastery of St. Mang, this museum has one of the finest European collections of historical lutes and violins.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Neuschwanstein Castle<\/strong><br \/>\nNear F\u00fcssen, in Schwangau, this fairy-tale castle was built from 1869 to 1886 by King Ludwig II, is said to be the model for Disney\u2019s Sleeping Beauty castle. Best to book tickets in advance. <\/li>\n<li><strong>Hohenschwangau Castle<\/strong><br \/>\nOpposite Neuschwanstein Castle, King Ludwig II\u2019s father built this castle as a summer residence for the royal family. Book ahead and online.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Boat trips on Lake Forggensee<\/strong><br \/>\nFor the best panoramic views of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles, take a cruise around Lake Forggensee.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span>Worth a Half-Day Visit: <\/span><span>N\u00f6rdlingen<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Located in the center of a gigantic meteorite crater, this is the only town in Germany where visitors can walk completely around its walls and battlements. The late Gothic church St. George has a 295-foot tall bell tower which visitors are welcome to climb.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<h3><span>Worth a Half-Day Visit: <\/span><span>Dinkelsb\u00fchl<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Dating back over 400 years, this picturesque town with its patrician and enchanting semi- timbered houses and magnificent churches make it one of Germany\u2019s best-preserved medieval towns.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<h3>ROTHENBURG OB DER TAUBER<\/h3>\n<p>The walled town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber is straight out of the late Middle Ages and is one of the most stunning towns on the Romantic Road. Brightly painted half-timbered houses with tall gable roofs line every cobblestone alleyway and square.<\/p>\n<h3>Where to Stay<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Hotel Reichs-K\u00fcchenmeister<\/strong><br \/>\nFamily-friendly hotel offers garden terrace, spa, wine tavern, and restaurant serving up Franconian and international cuisine.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hotel Goldener Hirsch<\/strong><br \/>\nMany rooms offer spectacular views over the Tauber Valley. Centrally located, making it an ideal place from which to explore Rothenburg.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bell Winery and Hotel (Glocke Weingut und Hotel)<\/strong><br \/>\nCozy comfortable rooms and a Franconian pub-restaurant, serving home-style cuisine, (don\u2019t miss the fish). Nice regional wine selection.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Don\u2019t Miss<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>St. Jacob\u2019s Church<\/strong><br \/>\nFamous for its altars, particularly the famous <i>Heilig-Blut-Altar<\/i> (Holy Blood Altar) by Tilman Riemenschneider.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Medieval Crime Museum (Kriminalmuseum)<\/strong><br \/>\nKids will enjoy the instruments of torture.<\/li>\n<li><strong>German Christmas Museum (Weinachtmuseum)<\/strong><br \/>\nStore features new and antique Christmas decorations. Wide range of wood and glass ornaments, music boxes, nutcrackers, wintry and heavenly scenes, and more.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Night Watchman Tour<\/strong><br \/>\nActors, dressed as a medieval night watchmen, lead guided tours (in English) at 8 p.m. every night, March through Christmas, in Market Square. Your watchman will also point out the city\u2019s best bars, including one called <em>Zur Holl<\/em> (To Hell).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span>Worth a Half-Day Visit: <\/span><span>Wieskirche Church, Steingaden<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The famous rococo \u201cChurch of the Scourged Saviour\u201d or Wieskirche church was built in the mid 18th century and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Time your visit to a Sunday morning when the men\u2019s choir sings.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<h3>AUGSBURG<\/h3>\n<p>Founded by Roman Emperor Augustus more than 2,000 years ago, this is one of Germany\u2019s oldest cities. It\u2019s economic highpoint came in the 15th and 16th centuries under the trading and banking activities of the Fugger and Welser families.<\/p>\n<h3>Where to Stay<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Steigenberger Drei Mohren<\/strong><br \/>\n500-year-old hotel, one of the most traditional in Bavaria. Choose between traditional Bavarian and Swabian cuisine. In summer, head for the beer garden.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Die Ecke<\/strong><br \/>\nOne of the town\u2019s finest. In olden times, Die Ecke hosted kings and their entourages.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Don\u2019t Miss<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The Fuggerei and the Fugger City Palace<\/strong><br \/>\nFounded in 1521, this is the world\u2019s oldest social housing: 67 houses and 140 council flats. The annual rent is 1 Rhenish gulden (the equivalent of $1.31). The attractive inner Ladies\u2019 Court was built in the style of the Italian Renaissance.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Augsburg Puppenkiste (Puppet Theater)<\/strong><br \/>\nDisplays much-loved marionettes and the history of the theater.\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>City Hall and Perlach Tower<\/strong><br \/>\nBuilt by Elias Holl from 1615 \u2013 1620, this City Hall is one of the most significant secular Renaissance building north of the Alps. Featuring: magnificent portals, a coffered ceiling, and mural paintings everywhere.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span>Worth a Half-Day Visit: <\/span><span>Bad Mergentheim<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Known as a health and spa vacation city, this Romantic Road city has an entire wellness park, flowering spa gardens, and an authentic Castle of the Teutonic Order, which includes a church and museum.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<h3>W\u00dcRZBURG<\/h3>\n<p>Set in the heart of the Franconian wine region on the River Main, this city is dominated by the Marienberg Fortress and surrounded by vineyards. The Residential Palace is a UNESCO World Heritage Monument and there is also a magnificent Cathedral, Chapel of St. Mary and romantic Old Bridge over the River Main (complete with a bar in the center of the bridge).<\/p>\n<h3>Where to Stay<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Best Western Premier Hotel Rebstock<\/strong><br \/>\nBehind a striking Rococo fa\u00e7ade are 70\u00a0stylish newly refurbished rooms. Home to &#8220;Kuno 1408&#8221; where Michelin-starred chef Benedikt Faust serves up inventive cuisine based on regional produce.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ghotel Hotel &amp; Living W\u00fcrzburg<\/strong><br \/>\nW\u00fcrzburg&#8217;s tallest building, a striking 17-story high-rise, houses W\u00fcrzburg&#8217;s\u00a0newest hotel.\u00a0The higher floors have breathtaking views.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mercure Hotel W\u00fcrzburg am Mainufer<\/strong><br \/>\nPart of the Accor brand, the Mercure is just a five-minute walk to the Old Town.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Where to Eat<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>W\u00fcrzburger Ratskeller<\/strong><br \/>\nHearty and moderately priced dishes in the Franconian tradition. In warm weather, choose the shady inner courtyard.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Brauerei-Gasthof Alter Kranen<\/strong><br \/>\nClassic German dishes as well as (surprise!) some good vegetarian options. Dine in the beer garden and try the regi.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Restaurant Alte Mainm\u00fchle<\/strong><br \/>\nTables at this former mill located next to W\u00fcrzburg&#8217;s Old Bridge offer spectacular views of the river Main and the Marienberg Fortress. Don\u2019t miss famous specialty, the &#8220;Franconian Wedding Dish&#8221; (tender boiled beef with noodles, horseradish sauce and cranberries).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Don\u2019t Miss<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Residenz<\/strong><br \/>\nThe Residence Palace, built by Balthasar Neumann, Europe&#8217;s greatest Baroque era architect in 1720,\u00a0is the city\u2019s prime attraction,\u00a0one of the most\u00a0beautiful castles in Germany. Tiepolo designed the grand staircase with the world\u2019s largest ceiling fresco.<\/li>\n<li><strong>R\u00f6ntgen Memorial Hall<\/strong><br \/>\nIn 1895, W\u00fcrzburg University physicist Wilhelm Conrad R\u00f6ntgen discovered the X-ray. Admire his laboratory and some of the original lab equipment at R\u00f6ntgen Memorial Hall.
