Introduced in 2015, the \u0089\u00db\u00cfHMF Can\u0089\u00db\u009d initiative encourages<br \/>\nrunners to bring donations on race day to be provided to food banks<br \/>\nwithin the communities that race events are held.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ecxMsoNormal\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"ecxMsoNormal\">More than 10,000 pounds of food was donated in 2015 through HMF Can donations. Last year, 900 pounds was gathered at the\u00a0Harvard Pilgrim Middletown Half Marathon\u00a0to<br \/>\nbenefit the Amazing Grace Food Pantry, reportedly their biggest ever<br \/>\none-time donation.\u00a0\u00a0HMF is hoping to beat that record at the April 3,<br \/>\n2016, Middletown event.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ecxMsoNormal\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"ecxMsoNormal\">The<br \/>\n2016 HMF Can drive will be kicked off on Friday, February 26 from<br \/>\n3:00-6:00 pm, and Saturday, February 27 from 9:00 am-noon during the HMF<br \/>\nApparel Warehouse Sale at 41 Sequin Drive in Glastonbury.\u00a0\u00a0Everyone<br \/>\nthat brings 3+ pounds of non-perishable food to donate will receive a<br \/>\nfree HMF race shirt (while supplies last).<\/p>\n<p class=\"ecxMsoNormal\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"ecxMsoNormal\">\u0089\u00db\u00cfRunners<br \/>\nappreciate when communities open up their roads for races and HMF Can<br \/>\nprovides a simple way to give back, just by adding a few cans and boxes<br \/>\nof food to their race day rituals,\u0089\u00db\u009d said Beth Shluger, Executive<br \/>\nDirector and CEO of Hartford Marathon Foundation.\u00a0\u00a0\u0089\u00db\u00cfWe\u0089\u00db\u00aare<br \/>\ncommitted to producing races that show off the best of these<br \/>\ncommunities; it\u0089\u00db\u00aas important to us that the only thing we\u0089\u00db\u00aall leave behind<br \/>\nafter an event is a positive impact.\u0089\u00db\u009d<\/p>\n<p class=\"ecxMsoNormal\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"ecxMsoNormal\">In<br \/>\naddition to hosting HMF Can drives, HMF also donates food leftover from<br \/>\nrace events to local groups.\u00a0\u00a0The Eversource Hartford Marathon, HMF\u0089\u00db\u00aas<br \/>\nlargest event with approximately 14,000 participants in 2015,\u00a0produced a<br \/>\ntotal donation of 4,129 pounds, from apples and bagels to loaves of<br \/>\nbread and bananas.\u00a0\u00a0Recipients included Open Hearth, South Park Inn and<br \/>\nFood Share.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ecxMsoNormal\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"ecxMsoNormal\">The<br \/>\nFoundation is committed to sustainability efforts and proactively seeks<br \/>\nopportunities to donate, reuse or repurpose as part of post-event<br \/>\noperations.\u00a0\u00a0Approximately 460 pounds in compost materials and 6,360<br \/>\npounds of recycling were produced at the Eversource Hartford<br \/>\nMarathon.\u00a0\u00a0Clothing donations from the event totaled 1,700<br \/>\npounds.\u00a0\u00a0Donate Life CT supported the effort, with volunteers stuffing<br \/>\n35 bags of discarded sweatshirts, hats, gloves and other layers shed by<br \/>\nrace participants along the race course.\u00a0\u00a0Donations went to local<br \/>\nshelters and charities.\u00a0\u00a0Another 440 pounds of clothing was donated from<br \/>\nthe HMF Warehouse to Goodwill to be distributed to 14 store locations<br \/>\nacross Connecticut.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ecxMsoNormal\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"ecxMsoNormal\">For more information on the HMF Can initiative or to register for 2016 events, please visit\u00a0www.hartfordmarathon.com.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"ecxMsoNormal\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"ecxMsoNormal\"><strong>About the Hartford Marathon Foundation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The<br \/>\nHartford Marathon Foundation, Inc. is a nonprofit organization founded<br \/>\nin 1994 to create and manage fitness events that inspire people to be<br \/>\nhealthy and fit.
