Saint John’s wrestling travels to compete at MSU-Moorhead’s Dragon Open at 11 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 8.<\/p>\n
The Johnnies return to action Sunday following a two-week hiatus since the Nov. 23 Auggie-Adidas Invitational in Minneapolis.<\/p>\n
Sophomore Jacob Scherber (Buffalo, Minn.) took sixth at 174 pounds with a 2-2 record. He started his day with a 6-3 decision before falling to Augsburg’s Nick Rogge in the quarterfinal, 13-9. Scherber bounced back with a 9-2 before exiting the tourney via fall to Dalton Nelson of Division II Upper Iowa.<\/p>\n
Freshman Mason Nibbe (Elbow Lake, Minn.\/West Central Area) was the other Johnnie with multiple wins on the day, as he claimed third in the silver bracket at heavyweight. He followed a 9-2 first-round win with a narrow 3-2 loss to Gage Wevley of Division II Southwest Minnesota State. Nibbe recorded a pin in the third-place match over Cameron Mitchell of NAIA William Penn (Iowa).<\/p>\n
Dragon Open Brackets\/Results on TrackWrestling.com<\/strong><\/p>\n LAST YEAR’S TOURNAMENT<\/strong>: SJU recorded a trio of top-three finishes at last year’s Dragon Open held on Dec. 1, 2018.<\/p>\n Senior Noah Becker (Browerville, Minn.) won the 133-pound title with a 3-0 record. He started his morning with a pin and a 5-3 decision of Concordia-Moorhead’s Jacob Prunty (5-3). Becker earned first-place honors with an 8-2 win over Division II MSU-Moorhead’s Seth Hutchison to improve to 7-1 on the young season.<\/p>\n Luke Dodd ’19 claimed third place at 197 pounds with a 3-1 record. He book-ended his day with a pair of decisions over Concordia-Moorhead wrestlers, 7-2 vs. Bryce Kallenbach in the first match and 11-4 vs. Jacob Arends in the third-place match. Dodd bounced back from a narrow 3-2 loss to Logan Rhode of Division I North Dakota State with an 18-1 technical fall in the consolation semifinal. Dodd is currently ranked No. 10 at 197 pounds by D3wrestle.com and is 6-2 on the year.<\/p>\n Scherber went 2-1 to take second in the 174-pound white bracket.
