AS Monaco have confirmed that Laurence Stewart has left the club after two years to become the technical director at Chelsea.
As initially revealed by The Athletic and later confirmed by sources contacted by Get French Football News, Stewart has switched the Principality for London. Stewart will form part of a revamped set-up at Chelsea, as new owner Todd Boehly continues to restructure the hierarchy at the club.
Whilst Chelsea are yet to construct their multi-club model, there is a desire to do so at the club’s board level. Stewart has experience of working within such structures. He had been a part of the Red Bull model, before later working at Monaco, where a link is established with Belgian top division side Cercle Bruges, who are also owned by Dmitry Rybolovlev. Players frequently move between the two clubs, often on loan.
At Monaco, Stewart has worked with sporting director Paul Mitchell, who has also been linked previously with a move to Chelsea. The London club are yet to make an appointment in that area.
Monaco added that Stewart would remain with the club until the end of the January transfer window, in order to ensure a smooth transition.
In a press release, Stewart said, “I am very happy to have participated in the sporting project and I will continue to devote all of my energy until the end of the mission. I am want to express my gratitude towards AS Monaco and the management of the club for having given me this opportunity.”
