Monaco midfielder Youssouf Fofana made his senior debut for France in the UEFA Nations League last month when Les Bleus locked horns with Austria.
Speaking to RMC Sport, Fofana admitted that he would like to represent the 2018 World Cup champions in the Qatar World Cup. However, the 23-year-old doesn’t appear to be too sure about his place in the French squad. He said:
“I was in the national team during the last break, so it became a goal. In the end, you realize that you are not that far. I don’t focus on it. The next few weeks will be decisive. I will do everything to be at least among the potential candidates selected and the coach will make his choices. I’ll have to come out of it with no regrets.”
It is understood that Didier Deschamps will head into the World Cup without N’Golo Kanté, with the Chelsea midfielder bound to miss the mega event with a hamstring injury.
Paul Poogba has not recovered yet from his knee injury. And thus, his place in the World Cup squad is far from certain. Fofana’s performance in France’s 2-0 defeat to Denmark was unconvincing. Deschamps will reportedly announce his squad for the World Cup on November 9.
