FARMINGDALE, NY — Farmingdale Medieval History Day is scheduled for June 3, the village announced.

People can experience the Middle Ages with fighting, dancing, arts and crafts on the Village Green, at 361 Main Street, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 3. It marks the third annual event.

The Canton of Lions End, in the Crown Province of Østgarðr, will wear medieval clothing of different centuries and perform demonstrations and display their skills.

“Being of Viking descent myself, I’m intrigued,” Farmingdale Village Mayor Ralph Ekstrand said.

The fighters and fencers will show off their prowess and their splendid armor. Rules forbid audience participation in the fighting, but they can answer questions. Tournament participants will choose a child in the crowd to champion and token prizes will be given to the winners of the tournaments.

Artisans of all sorts will display their work and give children and their parents hands-on time to explore their crafts.

People will be able to learn how to write in medieval fashion and what calligraphy entails, see how embroidery was done, and learn how glass beads were made in the Middle Ages.

“We hope to offer people a glimpse into the past by offering displays of armored combat, fencing, and various arts and crafts from the middle ages,” Juliet Gering-Gregory told Patch. “Our studies focus on history prior to 1600, heavily influenced by Medieval and Renaissance Europe, but certainly not exclusive to those regions and eras. We are excited to share our collected knowledge and perhaps entice some to follow us into history.”

Gering-Gregory goes by Lady Iola Wulfsdotter in Seneschal of Lions End (modernly Nassau County) in the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA).

Event-goers can play games that were created hundreds of years ago, but are still fun to play today. There will also be several merchants selling items relevant to the modern Middle Ages, such as hand-made soaps.

The free event is intended for all ages. The rain date is slated for June 10.

Medieval History Day coincides with the annual Farmingdale Fire Department Spring Street
Fair along Main Street on June 3.

“Come enjoy the late spring air and sunshine, shop, dine along Main Street, stop by the Village Green and step back to an earlier time, bring friends and family!” the village wrote. “Join the Canton of Lions End, the local SCA group in Farmingdale for family-oriented crafts, hands-on demonstrations and exhibits for adults and children.”

The event is planned with the Farmingdale Village Cultural Arts Committee.

The Society for Creative Anachronism, commonly called the SCA, is a nonprofit, educational, historical re-creation group.

The SCA holds events where its fighters compete in the lists to determine a champion, as well as exhibits fine arts and practical crafts, or holds feasts where it samples the cuisines of different medieval times and places, or hosts musical performances and dance classes where people can learn galliards and bransles.

The SCA also hold classes in various medieval activities, and provides demonstrations of medieval arts and sciences at fairs and festivals. The only requirements to attend one of the SCA’s events are an attempt at pre-17th century clothing and a willingness to participate in recreating the life of the pre-modern era.

The term “anachronism” refers to something that is out of its own time and place, said Gering-Gregory.

“If you are watching people in armor fighting with swords and shields in the 21st century, you are seeing something anachronistic,” Gering-Gregory said.
