JOLIET, IL — One of America’s favorite actors and one of the Chicago Cubs’ biggest celebrity fans, Bill Murray, might be in line to become the owner of the Joliet Slammers of the Frontier League, sources informed Joliet Patch. Another celebrity may also be part of the new ownership with Murray, Mike Veeck, son of late Chicago White Sox owner Bill Veeck. Mike Veeck is the feature of a new Netflix sports documentary called “The Saint of Second Chances.”
One source told Joliet Patch they are hearing that three people are involved in the ownership group looking to buy the Joliet Slammers, and that Murray and Veeck were both names they had heard. Another person who spoke with Joliet Patch said the third possible owner in the new investment group is Mike Veeck’s son, William, who goes by the nickname of Night Train.
Joliet Patch contacted Heather Mills, general manager and chief financial officer with the Joliet Slammers on Wednesday, and she called back saying she cannot disclose any names of possible owners at this time. However, Mills did confirm the Joliet City Council stadium committee is meeting next week to review the potential sale of more than 50 percent of the ownership rights of the Joliet Slammers.

When asked if Murray and Veeck were among the future buyers of the Joliet Slammers, Mills said she could not comment. As for Veeck, “The Saint of Second Chances” debuted on Netflix on Sept. 19.

“Mike Veeck grew up in the shadow of his hustler father, Hall of Fame baseball owner Bill Veeck,” the Netflix press release announced. “The Veeck name became both legendary and notorious in professional baseball as they introduced the fun at ballparks — giveaways, theme nights, fireworks, and more. But it all came to a screeching halt when Mike blew up his father’s career. Exiled from the game he loved, the younger Veeck spent the next few decades clawing his way up from rock bottom, determined to redeem himself.”
