Expanded Jitney Service Returns To Ocean City This Summer

OCEAN CITY, NJ — For the third year in a row, Ocean City will be offering a summer jitney service, and this year it continues to expand.

At their latest meeting, City Council approved a contract to the same service that has provided the jitney service since its inception. Starting this summer, the company will offer a “Senior Service Route” on top of the “Primary Evening Route” which runs on a continuous loop from 55th Street to Battersea Road.

The senior loop will run Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. year-round. It will run between the Howard S. Stainton Senior Center (which Ocean City recently assumed responsibility of) and several senior housing communities including Wesley by the Bay, Speitel Commons, Bayview Manor, UMC at the Shores and 500 Bay.

While the regular jitney route costs a $2 fee, the senior route will be free.

Additionally, Councilman Jody Levchuk said that officials are looking for more ways to boost jitney ridership. While ridership was up this past summer, it is still “a little low,” Levchuk said.

The jitney is a great service, he said, and helps visitors out with parking issues.

One idea to improve ridership is to include jitney information in the welcome packet renters get, Levchuk said.
