Former Pittsburgh Pirates Player Dies

PITTSBURGH, PA — Former Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Jose DeLeon, who once led the National League in strikeouts, has died.

DeLeon succumbed to cancer. He was 63.

The Pirates drafted DeLeon in 1979 and he pitched four of his 13 major league seasons in Pittsburgh. Debuting with the Bucs in 1983, he posted a 7-3 record in 15 starts. He was with the Pirates through 1986.

DeLeon also played for the White Sox, Cardinals, Phillies and Expos during his career. While with the Cardinals in 1989, he had a league-leading 201 strikeouts.

Overall, DeLeon went 86-119 with a 3.76 ERA over 13 seasons with 1,594 strikeouts and 841 walks.
