Student Brought Fake Gun To NJ High School, Prompting Lockdown: Police

DEPTFORD, NJ — A South Jersey high school was locked down after a photo appeared to show a student holding a firearm inside the bathroom. The student, who had a toy gun, has been arrested, according to Deptford police.

The photo from the Deptford High School bathroom had spread on social media, authorities said. Several officers responded to the school Friday, when educational administrators initiated a brief lockdown.

The student — a high school senior — was arrested without incident after the lockdown. Investigators entered his home and found a plastic toy gun, which appeared to be the same as the one in the photo, police said.

The Deptford Township Police Department lauded the school community for their assistance.

“We would like to praise the actions of the teachers, students, staff, and faculty of Deptford High,” said Det. Sgt. Robert Jones. “The lockdown protocol initiated today was seamless. The coordination between the school district and the police department was on full display. Although incidents like this are nerve-wracking, the professionalism displayed by school staff and students was remarkable. We are proud of you and we salute you all.”
