Pleasanton Teen Named Non-Traveling Replacement Olympic Athlete

PLEASANTON, CA — Pleasanton native Tiana Sumanasekera was named a non-traveling replacement athlete for the 2024 Paris Olympics US gymnastics team.

Sumanasekera, a 16-year-old student at the Pleasanton Virtual Academy who has already committed to UCLA on a full scholarship, is the youngest active member of the U.S. gymnastics senior national team. She has already racked an impressive list of showings, like the 2023 Pan-American all-around and balance beam champion. She also scored first at the 2021 American Classic in Indiana and at the 2022 OOFOS U.S. Gymnastics Championships

At the 2024 Olympic trials, Sumanasekera finished second on beam, sixth on the floor, and ninth all around, according to BVM Sports. The finalists competing in Paris will be Simone Biles, Jade Carey, Jordan Chiles, Sunisa Lee and Hezly Rivera. Joscelyn Roberson and Leanne Wong were named traveling alternates.
