New Superintendent Of Schools Begins Work In Suffield

SUFFIELD, CT — A longtime educator who most recently served as an administrator with Glastonbury Public Schools has started new duties as superintendent of schools in Suffield.

Matthew Dunbar, a unanimous choice of the Suffield Board of Education, began work Monday. According to a written statement, “The Board was particularly impressed with his accomplishments in establishing collaborative partnerships, his leadership in staff development, his experience with budget and facility planning, and his commitment to enhancing district communication.”

Dunbar comes to Suffield after a 12-year stint as assistant superintendent for administration and personnel in Glastonbury. His education career began more than 30 years ago as a teacher in Pomfret, then continued in Berlin, where he taught social studies at the middle and high school levels.

From 2001 to 2012, Dunbar worked in Glastonbury as an administrative intern, assistant principal and eventually principal of the high school. He became assistant superintendent in 2012.

He earned a Bachelor’s degree from Amherst College, a Master of Arts in education from the University of Michigan, and a sixth-year diploma in education and superintendent certification from the University of Connecticut.

He believes in the promotion of high quality teaching while providing our students with tremendous educational and extracurricular opportunities. During the rigorous interview process, Mr. Dunbar shared an authentic desire to connect with all stakeholders within the district and wider Suffield community. The Suffield Board of Education is looking forward to working with Mr. Dunbar in collaboration with our strong SPS leadership team as we strive to improve education for all of our students.”
