Historic Diner In Milford Could Close To Make Way For New Project

MILFORD, CT — A developer has filed plans with the city that call for a long-time restaurant to be replaced with a mixed-use project.

The project is at 249 Bridgeport Ave., the current site of the Bridgeport Flyer Diner. The diner was founded in 1973 and “has been proudly serving the Milford community for 50 years,” according to its website.

The restaurant serves classic diner fare like steak & eggs, burgers, milkshakes, and sandwiches. Bridgeport Flyer Diner listed its specials on its Facebook page Tuesday.

The plans filed with the city don’t specifically mention the Bridgeport Flyer Diner by name, but it does say “The current property is a restaurant/diner and will be changed to a mixed commercial and residential lot.”

The project’s developer, Robert Smith’s Metro Star Company, LLC, intends to build 50 dwelling units and first-floor office space and parking in two buildings, according to documents filed with the city. The back part of the existing parking lot, currently used for commercial parking, would need to be rezoned.

The residential portions of the buildings would house 7 studio apartments, 37 one-bedroom apartments, and 6 two-bedroom apartments. The commercial part would include 2,300 square feet of office space and an 820-square-foot gym.

Parking will be located under both buildings as well as in the remaining portion of the lot not occupied by a building.

The property’s owner is listed as Dennis Kokenos. Kokenos did not return a call seeking comment on Tuesday. Zoning officials also could not be reached for comment.

The project would have no significant impact on inland wetlands, according to city documents. The Fire Marshal’s Office, Traffic Division, and Sewer Commission all listed no objections to the project as well.

There will be a public hearing for the project at the Planning and Zoning Board meeting Tuesday at 7 p.m. at City Hall.
