Family Looks To Replace Holiday Decor, Tools After Lockport Garage Fire

LOCKPORT, IL — A “treasure trove” of items were among the things lost when a lightning strike ignited a fire that destroyed a garage in unincorporated Lockport Township on Aug. 28, according to a GoFundMe created to support the resident of the home.

Maria Austin told Patch that her mom, Christine Austin, lost generations of holiday decorations and memories, her gardening tools, her car, and other personal belongings.

A neighbor noticed smoke coming from the garage, called 911, and Christine was able to get out safely. The fire was contained to the garage, but its contents were destroyed.

“My mother has always been a kind and giving person, known in our community for her humor, generosity, and spirit, especially around the holidays,” Maria told Patch.

“This loss has been devastating for her, both emotionally and financially. She is a single mother that has always worked hard to provide for her family.”

The family is specifically looking to support Christine in collecting holiday items and decor, “to help restore some of the joy she brings to others every year.”

Maria said the family has also created a GoFundMe, as insurance is only paying a fraction of what is needed to rebuild.

According to the GoFundMe, funds would be used to replace what was lost, including Christmas and holiday decorations, cooking/grilling supplies and gardening tools.

The family also has a PO box at the New Lenox Post Office, and could arrange pick-up at the Lockport Fire Station for those who want to make physical donations. As of Wednesday, the GoFundMe has raised $2,960.

“Every contribution, no matter how small, will make a difference in helping Chris rebuild and recover from this tragedy,” the GoFundMe states.
