But the new representative, Emily Morquecho Cordova, departed from that tradition and spoke about issues.

She noted the new policies for students on tardiness and phones.

Over the summer, the board enacted a policy banning the use of phones in classrooms. And the school developed a new way of dealing with tardiness for the first class of the day.

“Students’ adjustment to the new cellphone and tardy policies has been difficult,” Morquecho Cordova said. “It’s important to shine light on the fact that while the tardy policy has motivated students to show up to school on time and have more time for academics, the cellphone policy has had a mixed response on the level of strictness.”

She said teachers have approached the policies with an “honest and mature” approach that has improved the learning environment.

Also in her report, Morquecho Cordova spoke about the recent shooting at Apalachee High School in Georgia. She said students feel anxiety about the killings.

“It is just another reminder that tragically this happens all too often in our society,” she said.

After her report, board President Jill Grech referred to the student leader’s inclusion of issues.

“We all appreciate hearing about all the events and the accolades,” Grech said. “But I just want to say especially I really appreciate feedback from the students on new policies or changing policies and current events, so please more of that. It’s really, really helpful.”

“I love to do it, so thank you,” Morquecho Cordova said.
