New Officer Joins Hatboro Police Department

HATBORO, PA —With family filling several rows of seats, Ty Dean took his place as the newest member of the Hatboro Borough Police Department.

During Monday night’s Hatboro Borough Council meeting, Dean was sworn in by Mayor Tim Schultz with Police Chief Mark Ruegg pinning on his badge as residents, family members, and council members clapped and offered congratulations.

Dean joins the police department with an extensive background in law enforcement.

Chief Ruegg touted those accomplishments in introducing Dean to the public and council, who unanimously approved his appointment to the police department.

The chief said that the 33-year-old Dean was the top candidate on the police department’s hiring list after the testing and hiring process was completed.

Dean was born and raised in western Virginia, where he graduated from Turner Ashby High School in 2009.

After high school, Dean began working for LSC Communications in a variety of roles.

He then joined the U.S. military, serving as a Marine for six years as a reservist where he worked as a combat engineer.

Dean received an honorable discharge from the Marine Corps in 2017.

Dean began his law enforcement in 2021 in Rockingham County, Va. Before moving to the Hatboro area earlier this year with his fiance and son, Dean was working for the Grottoes (Va.) Police Department.

The chief said that the department was similar to the one in Hatboro and Dean expressed how much he liked working for a smaller agency and felt that Hatboro would be a great fit for him.

“I can assure you that Mr. Dean is well qualified for the position and eager to start his career with our department,” Ruegg said.

Ruegg said Dean was set to start work on Tuesday and start by going through the police department’s field training program.

Once that training is completed, Dean will be assigned to Squad A, the chief said.
