CONNECTICUT — It’s a holiday break for some, but the last weekend of a really, really over-stuffed year for everybody. Whether you’re looking to let off some steam, or quietly reflect how you made it this far, there’s a weekend event somewhere in Connecticut to provide you some encouragement.
Grab a nearby wide-eyed youngster and chug on over to the Shore Line Trolley Museum in East Haven. The volunteers there are offering a special Christmas break edition of their Trolley Rides & Tours through Sunday, Dec. 29. The museum will still be decked out in boughs of holly and other holiday decorations, creating an Insta-fabulous backdrop for a trolley ride through a perfectly Connecticut winter snowscape. Tickets are available online here.
If you like your trains a little more mystical, The Wilton Historical Society is holding another Polar Express Night on Friday, as part of its ongoing Great Trains Holiday Show. From 6 to 8 p.m., families will “gather around for a cozy reading of this timeless children’s classic, bringing the story to life in a festive setting.” Afterward, guests will craft their own keepsake “Believe” Bell Ornament to take home, enjoy complimentary popcorn and hot cocoa, and view the exhibit – including a miniature Polar Express train – under the glow of the twinkling lights.

…or just spend a day in Greenwich, where there will be plenty to artfully occupy young and old. The Bruce Museum is offering a Family Gallery Tour for children 5 and up, and their caregivers, through the museum’s exhibitions. Families will be able to engage in conversations about the arts, sciences, and do hands-on activities. The tour is free with admission to the museum, Sunday, from 11 a.m. to noon. All weekend long, Bruce Museum visitors will say goodbye to 2024 by creating their own “puffy wish star” as part of Art Adventures, a drop-in program designed for children aged 4 and up and their families. It’s also free with general admission, runs 1-3 p.m., and no advanced registration is required.
Cross-town on Sunday, the Greenwich Historical Society is offering “Christmas in Cos Cob: A Holiday Tour of the Bush-Holley House.” It’s a journey back in time to the famed Cos Cob Art Colony through the lens of the Christmas traditions of some of that tribe’s most famous creators. Tours step off noon, 1:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. Tickets are available online here.

The Alpaca Gnomes will be playing their final show of the year this Friday at the Fairfield Theatre Company.
