Drug Bust At Star Inn On Joliet's Jefferson Street: Police

JOLIET — With only four days left in 2024, the Joliet Police Department has closed down the year with another drug bust at the Star Inn, resulting in two arrests.

Joliet police said that 65-year-old Dennis Harkins was arrested and released on a Notice to Appear on charges of possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver and possession of a controlled substance. Actually, Harkins ended up in the Will County Jail, after all because he had an outstanding arrest from DuPage County.

In addition to Harkins, 40-year-old Joseph Futrell of Joliet was also arrested on charges of possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver and possession of a controlled substance.

Joliet police spokesman Dwayne English said the following events happened on Friday:

Following an investigation conducted by the Joliet Police Narcotics Unit, Harkins was identified as a suspect in the delivery of narcotics. At 3:53 p.m., the officers executed a search warrant on a guest room rented by Harkins at the Star Inn, 2219 1⁄2 West Jefferson.

Upon search of the room, the officers recovered suspected crack cocaine. The room was determined to be unoccupied at the time of the search warrant. Harkins was located a short time later in the 2400 block of West Jefferson Street and was placed into custody without incident. It was learned that Futrell was also a resident of the room, and he was located in the 2200 block of West Jefferson Street and placed into custody without incident.

Harkins was determined to also have a valid DuPage County warrant for failing to appear in court on previous traffic charges.
