'Bought me? I came for free!' – Ibrahimovic jokes with Pogba after EFL Cup win

The pair, who have had a major impact on the club this season having both arrived in the summer, shared a laugh in the post-match interview on Sunday

Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba shared a laugh together following Manchester United’s League Cup final win over Southampton on Sunday, having led the club to its first major trophy under the Jose Mourinho regime.

Ibrahimovic scored his 25th and 26th goals of the season for United, opening the scoring against the Saints from a free-kick and heading the winner three minutes from time to secure the victory.

The Swede joined the Old Trafford club for free in the summer having run down his contract at Paris Saint-Germain, while Pogba’s return to the club cost United an eye-watering £89 million. 

Ibrahimovic is the only Red Devils player to have registered double figures in the goalscoring charts this season, and his importance was hailed by team-mate Pogba, with the forward light-heartedly poking fun at Pogba’s world-record transfer fee.

‘That’s why we bought him,” Pogba said to Sky Sports after the game, to which Ibrahimovic replied: “Bought me?! I came here for free. They bought you, I came here for free!”

While Ibrahimovic had an immediate impact on his United arrival, scoring five in his opening five appearances, Pogba struggled to settle into Jose Mourinho’s side. 

In recent months the French midfielder has grown into his role, though, and has scored four goals and created three more in his 24 Premier League appearances.
