Neville reacts to ‘startling’ Man Utd tactics at Liverpool

Gary Neville was bemused at Manchester United’s neglect of Andy Robertson during their 3-1 defeat to Liverpool on Sunday.

Xherdan Shaqiri came off the bench with 20 minutes left to score two goals and deliver three points for Jurgen Klopp’s men at Anfield.

Jose Mourinho picked out Robertson for special praise following the match and Neville couldn’t work out how they gave the left-back so much space to attack.

“The first I thought it was because Jesse Lingard hadn’t quite gone with him. The second time I thought ‘what’s going on?’’ Neville said on his Sky Sports podcast.

“The 52nd time, towards the end of the game, you’re thinking ‘what the hell is going on here’.

“What Robertson gave Liverpool an easy out – they could move the whole team up the pitch. It was bemusing to see Man United neglect that side of the pitch.

“I can only think that Jesse Lingard must have been told to ignore him.

“But this is Anfield, you’re away from home. You’re an inferior team. It’s 1-1. Go back with him. It was a startling thing to see in the second half.”
