Of Hope & Compassion: Chandigarh Man Collects Books, Distributes Them To Underprivileged Kids

For a lot of us, privilege can be blinding, to the extent that we cannot see how fortunate we are to have what we have. Many people still can’t afford to buy books due to financial condition of their families.

But for families like these, Chandigarh’s Sandeep Kumar is a ‘messiah’. He runs an NGO named ‘Open Eye Foundation’ and visits government schools, colleges and other areas to identify students who can’t buy books and help them.

His NGO will soon adopt 200 underprivileged children in order to help educate them.

He goes door-to-door to collect books for children and in the last two years he has collected 10,000 books. Kumar also wants other people to come forward to help these children and educate them.

Revealing his journey, he said when he was trained as a teacher during his JBT (Junior Basic Training) days, he learned that the children from less fortunate families did not have the resources to buy books.

Don’t Miss

“When I came back to Chandigarh, I found the condition terrible. I was looking at my books when this thought struck my mind that others can use these books. So I thought, why should not I collect these books for those children?” Kumar told ANI.

“Today, we have 200 children. There are organisations which provide free tuitions in the slums here to the children, we provide books to those children as well. We collect books, go to schools and ask the Principal or Teacher to provide a list of those children who are needy. The children have to return the books once the session is over,” he added.
