On September 5 every year, India celebrates the contribution of teachers but while every teacher plays a crucial role, there are some honourable mentions who rise above their responsibilities and bring about landmark transformations which may not have been possible otherwise.

The story of Amarjit Singh Chahal, a government school teacher who received the National Award on Teacher’s Day in Delhi on September 5, is one such.

THE INDIAN EXPRESS

The Indian Express reported that hundreds of people at the railway station with garlands in hand, an open gypsy decorated with flowers parked outside, drummers ready with their dhols and youths on motorbikes waiting to escort the procession that welcomed him at the railway station upon his return from Delhi.

Chahal, according to the report, is credited for transformation of four government schools – primary schools at Ralli and Jeetsar Bachhoana and senior secondary schools at Boha and Ranghrial – into ‘Smart Schools’ with his unique and innovative ideas.

He was not expecting such a welcome and it was a pleasant surprise for him.

“Who gives such a welcome to teachers? That too from a government school. I am indebted,” Chahal was quoted as saying.

Indeed, we need to give the due to our heroes such as Chahal, whose selfless services go a long way in building an educated society. There are hundreds of other teachers in India who are also rising above their difficulties and imparting education amidst lack of resources and an increasing population.
