In Trouble Again: Zomato Fined Rs 1 Lakh For Breeding Mosquitoes On Terrace Of Chennai Office

Zomato seems to have a knack for being in hot soup; how else do you explain the myriad of controversies it has been in? The food giant faced social boycott for its comment ‘Food has no religion’, and then it was later fined for accidentally delivering non-vegetarian food to a vegetarian. Now, it has been fined for breeding mosquitoes at one of its offices. 

Discarded bags were found on one of the terraces of Zomato’s Chetpet office in Chennai, by Greater Chennai Corporation. 

After the discovery, the food delivery app was fined Rs 1 lakh for its failure to take care and eradicate mosquito-breeding sources.

The health officials reportedly said that they found the discarded food delivery bags on the terrace of the office during an inspection on October 18. They bags reportedly had stagnant water in them and were serving as a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

The Rs 1 lakh fine comes in line with Greater Chennai Corporation’s anti-mosquito operation.

Zomato has reportedly acknowledged receiving the challan and is expected to deposit the fine by October 23. 

A large number of cases of dengue are being reported from Tamil Nadu and the state is carrying out inspections to control mosquito breeding. According to reports, so far, there have been 3,400 reported cases of dengue.
