Netizens Ask PM Modi To At Least Tweet On Pollution Crisis In North India

Prime Minister Narendra Modi may have marked a significant shift in Indian politics by aggressively using the micro-blogging site Twitter to convey his messages but users of the same platform are finding themselves in the midst of a strange fix as the tech-savvy PM hasn’t tweeted anything about the rising wave of pollution in India’s national capital that has brought life to a standstill while also posing serious health hazards to hundreds of thousands residing in and around the historic city of Delhi.

Ironically, PM Modi has advocated sustainable environment goals and has often waxed eloquently on the need to protect the environment.

However, people feel that the PM remains absent from the national discourse on pollution even as key members of his party, including Union ministers, are talking of everything from eating carrots to hearing music as if they are simply aimed at diverting the attention of the public from pollution.

Sadly, PM Modi isn’t around when people need him the most and he isn’t even showing concern on Twitter, which he uses even for sending birthday wishes and announcing key decisions. Or that’s perhaps how netizens are seeing it:

Don’t Miss

Pollution levels, as well as the Air Quality Index, was showing consistent improvement this year through August and September. In fact the month of August was marked by clear blue skies, which have largely been attributed to the rains. However, there were fears that Diwali may end the rising hope.

The fears proved to be true and for well over the past one week, Delhi has been covered under a thick layer of smog. So much so that air pollution in Delhi and adjoining areas have been described as a “very serious situation” by the Supreme Court on Monday.

People are having difficulty in breathing, and those suffering from asthama or other respiratory diseases are showing symptoms of dizziness while health experts have already stated that people living in this gas chamber are at risk of losing as many as seven years of their lives.

However, PM Modi, who tweets so frequently that his closest political opponents are light years away from him on Twitter, has remained tongue-tied on this issue of health emergency.
