Google Is Letting You Use AI To Test If You Sound As Good As Freddie Mercury

If you’re a true Freddie Mercury fan you’d know that this is the month 44 years ago when he performed Bohemian Rhapsody (which is also the first pre-1990 song to reach a billion views on YouTube) live, for the first time.

And now, Google has partnered with Queen to create the ‘FreddieMeter’ app that uses AI to detect how much your voice resembles that of the legend.

All you need to do is go to the website here, (it works on desktops — although you’ll need a microphone — Android as well as iOS devices) select one of the four iconic Queen songs and start singing.

Google

Don’t Miss

The screen will display timed lyrics like a karaoke. It’ll use machine learning to calculate a percentage based on sub-scores. The scoring will have on three categories — pitch (the accuracy of the notes hit by you), melody and timbre (how close is your vocal style to Freddie Mercury).

Now if you were wondering if Google would store your beautiful voice on its servers then you’re safe. Not because you don’t sound good or anything, it’s just that the service is using on-device machine learning, so it isn’t sending data to its servers.

Google has trained the AI with the help of Freddie Mercury’s vocals from studio tapes as well as sample covers. If you really wanted to know how you sounded, you will have the option of downloading the performance (with YouTube Music branding on top), which you can share with your friends. Once downloaded, Google will delete it.

While this might seem all fun and games, the real reason for this app to pop up is to help Mercury Pheonix Trust generate donations. In case you didn’t know, Mercury Pheonix Trust is a charity founded by Queen members Brian May, Roger Taylor, and Jim Beach to raise awareness to fight HIV/AIDS.
