Today at Commission, ‘the show is now in London’
More ‘negotiations and consultations’ are needed on the British side before Brexit talks can make headway.
On the agenda: Juncker’s plans, Brexit, college of commissioners, Manuel Marín.
On the podium: Commission chief spokesman Margaritis Schinas.
Updated agenda: Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker will on Tuesday afternoon meet with German Acting Finance Minister Peter Altmaier — a close ally of Chancellor Angela Merkel — and French Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire.
The day after the Brexit fail: Schinas confirmed that the weekly college of commissioners meeting on Wednesday will be addressed by chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier but said they will be looking at the next steps rather than dealing with the divorce issues (Ireland, divorce bill, citizens’ rights). For the Commission, “further negotiations and consultations” are needed among the British and “the show is now in London.” Schinas also said that Juncker is in regular contacts with Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar and it’s up to the British government to deal with internal issues. He added that no EU talks are planned with Northern Ireland’s Democratic Unionist Party, which killed off a deal that would (probably) have opened a path to phase two in the Brexit talks.
No date for a new Brexit meeting: Schinas was not able to confirm when Juncker and British Prime Minister Theresa May will meet again. Officials have told POLITICO that Wednesday afternoon or Thursday are likely.
Eurozone reform: Commission vice president for the euro Valdis Dombrovskis, economic and financial affairs commissioner Pierre Moscovici and budget commissioner Günther Oettinger will on Wednesday lunchtime present their proposals on eurozone reform.
Manuel Marín: Schinas said Juncker sent his condolences after the passing away to the family of Manuel Marín, a long-time member of the European Commission who was seen as the “father” of the Erasmus student exchange scheme, who died at the age of 68.
