Georgieva vows to sue alleged defamers

Commissioner will defend herself against ‘lies’ about links to organized crime and Soviet-era spying.

European Commission Vice President Kristalina Georgieva will not tolerate a campaign of “character assassination” waged against her “for many months” and will take the matter to court, she said in a post on Facebook Wednesday.

Georgieva was referring to Bulgarian media reports and an article published by the Foreign Policy Research Institute, a think tank based in the United States. In the article, Yves Kugelmann, a Switzerland-based journalist, insinuated Georgieva was not fit to run the U.N., citing rumors her family was linked to organized crime and she had been recruited by the country’s Soviet-era intelligence service.

Kugelmann concluded the “month-long investigation” did not allow for a “definitive conclusion about Ms. Georgieva’s alleged recruitment,” but said the European Commission ought to investigate the claims further.

Georgieva said the accusations were “lies which have sought to damage me and the office in which I serve,” and promised to sue.

“Many falsehoods have been spread about me. I will pursue those who continue to spread them through the courts,” she vowed.
