New Commission heads of office in Berlin and Lisbon

Richard Kühnel, who has headed the European Commission’s representation in Vienna since 2008, is to head its representation in Berlin from 1 June.

Kühnel was a member of the private office of Benita Ferrero-Waldner, former European commissioner for external relations and European neighbourhood policy, from 2004-08. Before that he worked in the Austrian foreign ministry, which sent him to its missions in the United Nations, Japan and Croatia. Marie-Therese Duffy-Haeusler, an Irishwoman, has been interim head of the Berlin representation since October 2013, since the departure of Matthias Petschke.

Mariá de Aires Soares is to be the head of the European Commission’s delegation in Lisbon, from 16 May.

A Commission official, she is currently seconded to the ITER thermonuclear reactor project in Cadarache, where she is head of the finance and budget division. Before that, she was minister-counsellor for research, technology, innovation and education at the EU’s delegation in Washington, DC.

Luiz Sá Pessoa has been acting head of delegation in Lisbon, since the departure of Margarida Marques.
