Giant Saguaro Cactus Impales Car Windshield In Tucson Crash

TUCSON, AZ — The giant saguaro (pronounced “suh-wahr-oh”) cactus is the desert’s most imposing plant and its prickly spines can inflict serious damage. It more than lived up to its reputation Wednesday morning, and authorities say it’s a wonder a Tucson driver wasn’t seriously injured when the cactus impaled his windshield after he crashed into it.

Officials with the Pima County Sheriff’s Department received a 911 call around 9:30 a.m. reporting that a car had traveled into the median and struck the cactus, one of the most visible symbols of the desert Southwest.

The cactus speared the car windshield, ramming through it like a large log.

The large cactus barely missed the driver, news station KOLD reported. The Northwest Fire District, which responded, tweeted: “Miraculously, no injuries were reported.”

Deputy Daniel Jelineo told the Arizona Daily Star the driver, who wasn’t identified, showed signs of impairment and was detained. Deputies are investigating.
