Pool A
Pool A was a competitive affair that included the Netherlands, Japan, Germany, Mexico, Argentina and Cameroon. As expected Cameroon struggled only picking up one victory in their five games, with a 3-1 set win against Mexico. The group was led by Netherlands who came out with a faultless five victories from five, dropping just three sets. The hosts Japan also followed them through, losing only to the Dutch in which they also dropped just three sets. Both sides have it all to do if they are to go all the way.
Pool B
Pool B included Italy, China, Turkey, Bulgaria, Canada and Cuba. The latter started with little expectations and thus struggled, losing all five of their games. It would be the Italians who progressed through as group winners, with five successes. They lost just one set in the process. China were also impressive in the group only losing to the Italians.
Pool C
The penultimate group was headed by the USA, who as expected topped the group, winning all five games. The Russians finished as runners-up, losing only to the USA with both sides dropping five sets throughout. The two sides in the group to struggle most were Korea and Trinidad & Tobago, winning just one match between them. Thailand and Azerbaijan were the other sides in the group both picking up several wins.
