Johnston Named NSIC Wrestler of the Week

MANKATO, Minn. — Senior Zach Johnston earned Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Wrestler of the Week honors after earning a pair of individual wins in the Mavericks’ wins over U-Mary and No. 23 Minot State.

Johnston, a Waukee, Iowa native, improved to 13-4 on the season. The 174-pounder, who holds the No. 10 ranking, posted a 6-2 upset win over No. 7 Phillip Springsteen of U-Mary in the Mavericks’ 29-12 win over the Marauders. He also cruised to a 19-4 technical fall win over Joey Lopez of Minot State as the Mavericks topped the Beavers 27-13.

This is Johnston’s second time being named NSIC Wrestler of the Week during the 2019-20 season. He earned the honor on Dec. 9, 2019 after wresting his way to a 5-0 record en route to winning the 174-pound bracket at the Buena Vista Open.

The No. 17 Minnesota State wrestling team will be back in action Thursday, Jan. 30, when the Mavericks travel to Marshall, Minn., to face the Mustangs at 7:00 p.m.
