CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – North Dakota State 133-pounder Cam Sykora and 157 Luke Weber advanced to the semifinals during the first day of the 2020 Southern Scuffle, presented by Compound Sportswear, on Wednesday, Jan. 1, in McKenzie Arena. Seven NDSU wrestlers are still alive in the consolation bracket.
North Dakota State is second in the team standings with 63 points. Oklahoma State is first with 70 points, NC State is third with 61.5 points, and Rider and Stanford are tied for fourth with 61 points.
The Southern Scuffle continues at 9 a.m. Central Time on Thursday, Jan. 2, with the fifth round of consolation, while the championship semifinals and consolation quarterfinals are scheduled to start at 11 a.m. The consolation semifinals are scheduled to begin at approximately 1 p.m., while the championship finals and medal matches will start at 6 p.m.
Sykora, a redshirt senior from Wheaton, Minn., entered as the No. 2 seed at 133 pounds. He opened with a 16-1 tech fall at 4:14 over Justin Patrick of Cleveland State, followed with a 15-3 major decision over Navy’s Casey Cobb and finished with his first pin of the season at 4:03 over Chandler Olson of Drexel. With the three wins, Sykora improved to 6-1 on the season including four tech falls.
Weber, a redshirt junior from Forsyth, Mont., posted a 4-0 record during the opening day including a pair of pins over Hunter Costa of Davidson at 5:44 and Oregon State’s Hunter Willits at 1:45. He posted a 12-1 major decision over AJ Burkhart of Lehigh. Weber earned a 5-4 decision over Matt Zovistoski. Zovistoski recorded a takedown to take a 4-3 lead in the third, but Weber notched an escape and gained a point on riding time.
NDSU has seven wrestlers still kicking in the consolation bracket – 149 Jaden Van Maanen (6-7 overall, 5-1 Southern Scuffle), 157 Jared Franek (13-5, 3-1), 174 Lorenzo De La Riva (3-4, 2-1), 184 Noah Cressell (8-4, 3-1), 197 Cordell Eaton (7-4, 3-1), 285 Brandon Metz (13-3, 2-1) and 285 Dan Stibral (8-3, 2-1).
