Polish triumph, Brazil out of Final Six!

Poland once again beat up Brazil and this time consequences were serious – Brazil lost chance to win World League

Yesterday we could see an incredible tough game for both sides. First, Bernardo Rezende surprised everyone by sending Giba to play in the basic squad. The main difficulty was the fact that both teams had their own huge problems with a quality of game. Poland managed to take a lead in the beginning, but then Brazil catch them up. Polish players made a great number of their own mistakes, which definitely didn’t prove their result. However, this first part was tight to the end. Michal Ruciak went into the court for a short change and he scored ace service immediately. Then Vissotto gave his hand to the team and he was the main creator of the final victory in this part.

The second set was quite similar. Both teams were keeping tie for a while, but then Brazil went ahead. Murillo Endres was in a good shape, also Giba gave his great support after quite long break. Andrea Anastasi felt the danger of 2:0 Brazil and he decided that Pawel Zagumny had to change Lukasz Zygadlo. After that, the picture of the game was different. Zagumny had a long series on the service, when Poland made up all looses and gained 21:20 leading. Bartosz Kurek did the rest and it was 1:1.

Another set was unusual. Brazil got a huge lead and they only made it bigger (5:1, 11:6, 16:8), but after the second technical time out, Poland got rid off many mistakes and their managed to catch up Brazil (22:23). In the end Polish players made some serious mistakes though and Brazil won this part after all.

With a great support of Bartosz Kurek and Zbigniew Bartman, Poles won another set. They played much better than in the previous part, so Brazilian team got a little frustrated and Bruno Rezende was trying to provoke a verbal fight. However he failed and Poland had to made it to the tie brak and so did they, winning with Brazil 25:17.

Poland beat Brazil decisively with a block, patience and also some luck. They took a lead after the short time of equal result. One of the last actions lasted only because the extremely strong Brazilian attack hit the leg of Piotr Nowakowski and all in all Poles won this point. Brazil is going home and Cuba and Poland are moving forward.

Brazil – Poland 2:3 (25:23, 23:25, 17:25, 10:15)

Andrea Anastasi, coach of Poland: It is a very important victory for us as we moved forward to the semi-finals with having played just one match. Nevertheless, we have to improve a lot of things in our system of playing and work with the rhythm, as well.

Marcin Mozdzodek, captain of Poland: We are happy with the result today. We won against one of the best teams in the world for the last decade and, what is more, it was for the fourth time this year. We did not start the match in a distracted way, but we managed to handle the situation and became more focused. We fought for every point and I think this made the difference.

Bernardo Rezende, coach of Brazil: The Polish team played a very good match. What I liked today in our attitude towards the match was that we played with heart. Giba came back on the court and joined the others in a very good way. Now we will concentrate on our preparation for the Olympics and improve our play more. We are sorry that we will not play during the weekend here.

Gilberto Godoy Filho, captain of Brazil: Good luck to the Polish team in the semi-finals. From what we showed today, I am happy that we changed our attitude since yesterday. We are looking forward to London where we will be better prepared.
