EU needs to ‘see movement’ from UK on post-Brexit trade deal: Phil Hogan

Unless London shows more ‘good faith’ in negotiations, ‘it’s going to be too late,’ says European commissioner.

The U.K. needs to show more “ambition” if it wants to secure a post-Brexit deal with the EU before the end of the transition period, European Commissioner for Trade Phil Hogan said today.

Speaking with Ireland’s RTÉ radio, the Irish commissioner said the EU over the past few months has shown it is willing to compromise, but that a “lack of ambition” on the U.K. side means “very little has happened.”

“There’s a frustration on the EU side about the fact that the good faith in terms of the negotiations that’s required on both sides is not happening to the extent that it should,” Hogan said, citing divergent stances on issues such as fisheries and the role of the European Court of Justice in dispute resolution.

“[U.K. Prime Minister] Boris Johnson has explicitly stated that he wants a deal, so we need to see movement on the U.K. side soon or else it’s going to be too late,” Hogan said.

The commissioner added that he still believes that a deal can be struck by December 31, when the transition period ends.

“The ambition of that deal on the EU side is real. I don’t see the same ambition on the U.K. side, so the ball is in the U.K.’s court. If they want a deal, there is a deal to be done,” he said.
