RENO, Nev.— North Dakota State University 125-pounder Josh Rodriguez won six of seven matches to place third and highlight the Bison run at the 2015 Reno Tournament of Champions on Sunday, Dec. 20. Three other NDSU wrestlers placed in the top six at the event. Through the 149-pound division, the Bison had 57.5 points and was ninth in the team standings.
North Dakota State is scheduled to send wrestlers to the Midlands Championships hosted by Northwestern University on Dec. 29-30 in Evanston, Ill.

Rodriguez, a junior from Guadalupe, Calif. (Righetti H.S.), defeated Indiana University’s Elijah Oliver 8-4 in the third place match. He used a pair of takedowns to build a 4-1 lead after one period, gained a pair of points on second-period escapes, gained a point on stalling and closed out with a 1:04 of riding time.
Rodriguez rebounded from a 3-2 sudden victory overtime loss in the quarterfinals to Drew Tempelman of Wyoming, the eventual Reno TOC 125 champion, with three straight wins. He defeated Brent Fleetwood of Central Michigan for the second time by the score of 6-3. Rodriguez recorded back-to-back pins of unattached Kegan Calkins at 4:58 and Utah Valley’s Chasen Tolbert at 2:40 to reach the third place match.
Rodriguez opened with a 4-2 win over Fleetwood and 15-5 major decision against unattached Aaron Assad. He went 6-1 at the tournament and improved to 20-5 overall.
Clay Ream, a 149-pound sophomore from Wentzville, Mo., finished fifth at the Reno TOC, while 149-pound sophomore Kyle Gliva (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) and 141-pound sophomore Mitch Bengtson (St. Cloud, Minn.) each placed sixth. Bengtson went 3-3 during the event with all three wins coming by pin and stands 12-7 this season.
Ream and Gliva hooked up in the Reno TOC fifth place match. Ream took an early 2-0 lead on a takedown with 27-seconds left. Gliva rallied with an early escape and went ahead 3-2 on a takedown with 15-seconds remaining in the second. Ream tied things at 3-all on an escape and recorded a takedown 6-seconds into the sudden victory-1 overtime period for the 5-3 win.
Ream won his first three matches including a 23-4 tech fall over Brandon Weber of MSU-Northern, 9-0 major decision over Southern Oregon’s Chandler Michael and 13-7 decision against Indiana’s Luke Blanton. He dropped an 8-4 decision to Boise State’s Geo Martinez and lost an 11-3 major decision to Stanford’s Paul Fox. Ream went 4-2 at the Reno TOC and is 13-8 on the season.
Gliva rattled off six straight wins after dropping an 11-2 major decision to Arizona State’s Christian Pagdilao. Those six wins included a pin of CSU-Bakersfield’s Coleman Hammond at 1:46, a 16-1 tech fall over Connor Kim of Cal Poly and 13-4 major decision against Brandon Weber of MSU-Northern. Gliva went 6-3 at the tournament and improved to 12-5.
Nico Colunga, a 133-pound freshman, compiled a 4-2 record at the tournament, while 174-pound redshirt freshman Blake Thompson won two out of four matches. Tyler McNutt (165) and Mitchell Friedman (141) each went 1-1, while Logan Paxton (197) and Ben Tynan (285) both finished 0-2.
