EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — Four Augsburg College wrestlers earned weight-class titles, part of 13 Auggie placewinners at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Blugold Open on Saturday.
Mike Fuenffinger (JR, Hibbing, Minn.), Chad Bartschenfeld (JR, Amery, Wis.), Tommy Teigen (JR, Ham Lake, Minn./Meadow Creek Christian HS) and Chad Johnson (SR, Ferryville, Wis./De Soto HS) won titles in their weight classes for the Auggies, ranked No. 7 in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III national poll.

Fuenffinger, ranked No. 4 nationally at 125 pounds, improved to 24-3 on the season with four victories, including an opening-round first-period pin and wins in the semifinals and finals over Division II St. Cloud State wrestlers — a 5-4 win over Joel Salomon in the semifinals and an 8-4 win over Dallas Collier in the championship match. The tournament title was Fuenffinger’s fourth this season, improving to 67-20 in his collegiate career.
Johnson, the two-time defending Division III heavyweight national champion and top-ranked wrestler in Division III, scored an opening-round pin and three more wins to score the title at heavyweight, improving to 24-1 on the season and 129-14 in his Augsburg career. He scored an 8-1 win over Division I wrestler Brock Horwath of Wisconsin in the championship match, giving him four tournament victories this season. A three-time All-American, Johnson is now 97-3 since the beginning of his sophomore season.
Bartschenfeld improved to 17-12 on the season with the weight-class title at 133 pounds, claiming two wins over Division II wrestlers — a 4-1 win over Jarred Oftedahl of St. Cloud State in the semifinals and a 4-1 win over Joseph Her of Wisconsin-Parkside in the finals.
Teigen improved to 18-9 on the season with four wins, including a pin and a major-decision triumph, to take the title at 184. He scored a 6-0 win over Wisconsin-Parkside’s Mike Kelly in the finals.
Justin Bowland (SR, Foley, Minn.) finished second at 165 pounds, with his lone loss coming to a Division I wrestler from Wisconsin in the finals. He went 3-1 with a major-decision win on the day. Will Keeter (JR, Twin Falls, Idaho) went 5-1 on the day, with two pins, two technical-fall wins and a major-decision triumph, to finish third at 149.
Matt Hechsel (JR, Apple Valley, Minn.), ranked No. 1 nationally at 197 pounds, finished fourth on Saturday, as did Marcus Hamer (FY, Kimball, Minn.) at 141. Blake Miller (FY, Staples, Minn./Staples-Motley HS) placed sixth at 141, and two Auggies won consolation bracket titles — Tyrell Martin (JR, Eagan, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) at 174 and Miles Hammerlund (FY, Delano, Minn.) at 184.
Augsburg’s White Team (junior varsity) competed at the Winona State Invitational on Saturday, with competition against varsity and club opponents in a round-robin format. Seven Auggies earned champion or co-champion honors in the event.
Augsburg returns to action on Thursday (2/13) at 7 p.m., with a dual meet at Wisconsin-La Crosse.
