The St. Cloud State University wrestling found success on the mat and in the classroom during the 2012-13 season. The Huskies recently finished as the runner-up at the NCAA Division II championships for the third consecutive season and they were also finished seventh on the 2012-13 Division All-Academic Wrestling Teams list with a team grade point average of 3.214.
SCSU wrestlers named to the 2012-13 Division II All-Academic Wrestling First Team were junior communication arts and literature major Chris Brassell, senior sports management major Jacob Kahnke and freshman entrepeneurship major Clint Poster. Brassell wrestled at 197-pounds for the Huskies in 2012-13.
A four-time NCAA All-American, Kahnke (23-1) wrestled at 285-pounds for the Huskies this season and completed his year with a third place finish at the 2013 NCAA Division II championships. Poster (35-5) gained All-America status for the first time this season thanks to his fourth place finish in the 157-pound division at the 2013 NCAA Division II championships.
SCSU wrestlers named to the Division II Wrestling All-Academic Second Team were senior electrical engineering major Jacob R. Horn, freshman pre-business major Brady Johnshoy, sophomore community psychology major Ben McPhail and freshman accounting major Cody Tibbetts.
Husky student-athletes named to the Division II Wrestling All-Academic Honorable Mention list in 2012-13 included freshman management major Jared Kust, sophomore art major Tyler Mathison and freshman chemistry major Matt Nelson. Of note, Nelson claimed his first All-America award with a fifth place finish at 141-pounds at the 2013 NCAA Division II championships. His rookie season record at SCSU was 22-9 in 2012-13.
The Division II All-Academic Wrestling Team consists of 168 student-athletes from 38 universities and colleges. SCSU was one of only three teams in the nation to place three student-athletes on the First Team this season.
In order for a student-athlete to be nominated for these awards, they need to have a minimum 3.00 GPA, be in their second full year at the school, be a varsity member of the team or a key reserve, demonstrate a degree of skill and a minimum of two letters of recommendation submitted on his behalf. The teams are selected by the Division II Wrestling Coaches Association.
For the team academic standings, the team GPA is calculated by averaging the cumulative GPA of 10 wrestlers from each team of which eight of those wrestlers must have compete in their team’s NCAA Division II qualifying tournament.
This marks the third time since 2008 that the Huskies have gained a top 10 team finish in the All-Academic standings. Under the direction of head coach Steve Costanzo, SCSU student-athletes have earned All-Acadmemic honors 64 times since 2007.
