The Lawcast – WCW Starrcade 1989 Is Tournament Porn For Weirdos

Welcome, boys and girls, to yet another episode of the Lawcast. We’re back from vacation to hit you with everything we recorded while we were gone. We’ll have another Lawcast for you on Thursday (WWE Royal Rumble 97) and a new bonus episode for our Patreon subscribers on Friday (The Lawcast’s State of the Wrestling World Address), before officially launching into our yearly Wrestlemania spectacular next week starting with Wrestlemania 18. Strap in, kids. It’s gonna get nuts.

But before we get to those other shows, we have to finish up our Starrcade coverage with one of the weirdest ideas in Dusty Rhodes’ long line of wacky ideas. We’re talking about Starrcade 89 which featured not 1, but 2 round robin tournaments to determine both the best singles wrestler and tag team in the world. It’s like 2 G1 Climax tournaments, except both are packed into one night and someone let a guy named Nitron come.

It’s a terrible disaster, and a turning point for the company. But even more importantly than that, WHO THE HELL NAMES THEIR KID NITRON?!

Hey guys! If you haven’t joined our the Lawcast Patreon yet, here’s a look at what’s new:

We now have SIX bonus episodes available to our donors, including a look at the rarely seen original pilot of Smackdown, an episode of So You Think You Can? where Steve is forced to try to fix the many, many issues with Starrcade 97, and we just released an episode of The 90s Sports podcast, something that started as a joke, but that people actually gave us money because they wanted to listen to it. You guys are weird and we love you. We also have an episode where Cewsh takes his turn in the booking chair and will try to fix the calamitous mess of ECW December to Dismember. We also have a recap of the past decade in wrestling, with a focus on the big picture stuff. How did WWE go from a monopoly to having actual competition? What sparked the women’s revolution? What caused New Japan to become the freight train it is today? And what does the next decade hold in store?

Out latest bonus episode is a State of the Wrestling Industry Address, where we look at what is working and not working in modern wrestling, and try to predict its future.

So come on. Think of it as hiring us for a job where you only pay us $2.50 an hour. I’m pretty sure that’s not even legal, but we’ll just keep it between us.

Also, we have finally found a way to meet the request that we get the most often, and we finally now have a full archive for the Lawcast where you can go and listen to us talk about Sid for nearly 100 episodes. In the future we’ll have playlists up there to make it easier to navigate, but for now we’ve got the whole deal there for the taking. Enjoy!
